  • Call for Submissions: Bad Company (crime-thriller anthology | South Africa)

    Deadline: 31 August 2012

With the breaking news that Deon Meyer, the King of SA crime fiction, will write a foreword, it’s time to announce a new crime-thriller anthology on the roll for 2013!

After the success of Bad Company, the crime-fiction short story anthology published 2008, which featured the crème de la crime writers of SA, it’s time for a new collection. Oh yes. So this is the call to all writers out there interested in the seamy, nasty, murderous, sometimes all too human side of life, to get writing.

The (working) title is Bloody Satisfied, and the only limit to your imagination must be that Justice is done. With so much bloody crime in South Africa, it’s time we had satisfaction – at least twenty stories worth – with killer tales glinting sharp as knives.

The collection will feature experts at the craft – internationally acclaimed Roger Smith, Sunday Times Fiction Prize shortlisted author Hawa Golakai, Edgar Award nominated Michael Stanley – but we’re looking for new voices.

Kill, steal, maim whomever, whatever, as long as you do it on the page, and as long as the baddie gets a certain comeuppance, legal or otherwise. Oh yes, set in South Africa please. Diversity, of setting and especially voice, will mean the publication of an exciting home-grown collection.

THE GENRES OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY

Because the term Science Fiction often encompasses more than some strict definitions would allow, some authors prefer to expand the acronym SF to the term Speculative Fiction (coined by Robert A. Heinlein),which is an umbrella term that includes Fantasy, Horror, Supernatural and Alternative Histories, as well as highly specialised genres like dystopian or apocalyptic fiction. Some stories fit neatly into these categories, while others can be classified into two (or even more) genres. As a rule, Nova stories should be either Science Fiction or Fantasy (SF or F). This explicitly excludes stories that are retold myths and horror stories (with no SF or F elements). Sub-genres such as apocalyptic fiction – while rather overdone - do, usually, fall into the SF category, Alternative Histories, stories of the supernatural (ghost stories, or stories exclusively involving daemons, etc), have to be written extremely well to impress the judges.

While the Fantasy genre is sometimes understood to include myths and legends, they do not apply to Nova. For us, Fantasy stories usually involve magic or magical creatures (unicorns, trolls, etc, but not tokoloshes). Talking rabbits and furniture may make good stories, but don’t really qualify as Nova Fantasy.

And if “I woke up and it was all a dream”... then it IS a dream, not Fantasy.

Nova SF expects stories that have a scientific or technological basis, usually with a plausible (even if it does require suspension of disbelief) plot or premise.

While it can be either SF or F, it may be difficult (but not impossible) to write a South African Fantasy story. Expectations of what makes a story South African can be found in the next section.

Finally, these are general guidelines. The best authors of the world have been known to break “rules of good writing”, but they do it well. Extremely well. A winning story can bend the guidelines above, as long as it is well written and well received.

UCT’s Centre for African Studies and its interdisciplinary postgraduate, peer-reviewed journal, postamble, invite you to submit papers, photographic essays and book reviews that address the formations and expressions of counter- cultures in Africa.

  • Getting Published Workshop with David Chislett (South Africa)

    Date: 12 June 2012

Allaboutwriting is proud to present their third Getting Published workshop with David Chislett in Johannesburg on the evening of Tuesday 12 June. Unlike most writing courses this short course looks at what you need to be doing and thinking about while writing (and after) in order to get published.

The digital revolution is changing the landscape in publishing, just like it did in the music industry. In many ways this is proving difficult for both writers and publishers. But it is generating plenty of new opportunities for the writer who understands what is going on and is able to tap into the changes for their benefit.

The Getting Published workshop will benefit both writers who are looking for that deal with a mainstream publisher AND those who are keen to explore new, independent opportunities. “As with many creative industries, most problems that artists experience revolve around not understanding the business model,” explains Chislett, “This course is designed to explain how the model works and indicate the known, credible paths through it, while exploring some of the alternative options that have more recently come into existence.”

There is more to getting published than just writing a book, and this workshop explores all of the processes, structures and role players that you need to know about in order to get from writing a book to seeing it on a bookstore shelf.

Chislett will be presenting the Getting Published workshop at Allaboutwriting’s base in Johannesburg on 12 June. The workshop runs from 6pm to 9.30pm, at a cost of R600.00 per head. A light supper is included.

The workshop draws on Chislett’s knowledge and experience from marketing in the publishing industry, compiling and editing short fiction, being a published author and self-publishing a music industry text book and a poetry collection.

David Chislett is the originator of the Urban series of short fiction and author of “A Body Remembered” and “1,2,1,2”. He is an experienced workshop facilitator and speaker and well-known entertainment journalist and publicist.

Allaboutwriting is a partnership between Richard Beynon and Jo-Anne Richards who are passionate about good writing, and have devised their courses to help communicate that passion – plus the skills that make it much more than an academic exercise.

    Deadline: 31 May 2012

Anthony Sampson was editor of Drum magazine in the 1950s, when it captured the spirit of the times with its bold coverage of jazz, gangsters, shebeens and the celebration of black heroes.

He worked with many of the finest writers and photographers the South Africa has seen and pioneered a powerful, first-person narrative style of reporting and investigation, with the ‘Mr Drum’ character going to prison or working on farms to expose appalling conditions.

The Anthony Sampson Foundation has been established to promote this tradition of reporting and to encourage new, young voices among journalists and would-be journalists.

    2012 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
